Work Team Information
Several times a year, the American co-directors of House of Hope, Carl and Carole Vorst, lead groups on short-term mission trips to Haiti. Usually lasting about seven to ten days, these trips are a hands-on way to experience Haiti and positively affect life for those who live there.
The time at House of Hope is spent on work projects and getting to know the girls. Past groups have painted walls, constructed beds and shelving, upgraded electrical wiring, installed plumbing and taught the girls sewing, etiquette and hygiene. On recent mission trips, workers also taught neighborhood children hygiene and well care and spent time holding Vacation Bible School under a neighboring mango tree. Work projects are selected to meet both the talents of the team and the needs in Haiti.
The most rewarding part of the trip is getting to know the House of Hope girls. Playing games, singing songs and just spending time with one another creates memories that no one will ever forget. Sponsors who are able to come to Haiti to meet their child are also able to build a lasting personal relationship.
Time is always taken for a little play and sightseeing. A great way to get away from the Haitian heat is a trip to a sandy Caribbean beach. The time is spent swimming, sunbathing, picking up shells and just relaxing. A special Haitian "experience" is bartering for unique Haitian crafts. For the less adventuresome, there is always a quiet gift shop, where the prices may be reasonable, but the challenge missing!
An often-heard comment is "I really believe that my trip to Haiti was a life-changing experience and that I received more than I gave." When leaving for Haiti, the common expectations are hard work, getting hot and being able to help people in need. As the trip progresses the realization sets in that there is so much to learn and receive from the Haitian hosts. Gratefulness, love, acceptance and sacrifice are some of the unexpected gifts.
